Nacional Party Begins Runoff Campaign

The Nacional Party (PN) held what may be considered as the first political rally for the second round of the national elections during a meeting of leaders from the departments of Canelones and Montevideo. PN vice presidential candidate Jorge Larrañaga said the party “has the support” of “Uruguayans without a party.”

Larrañaga said on 29 November, Uruguayans will “get to choose who will lead the presidency of the republic, and here the thing is very clear: the radicalization of Mujica or the balance of Dr. Lacalle.”

In national elections held on Sunday 25 October, the PN got less than 30% of the vote, and was almost 20 percentage points behind the governing party, the Frente Amplio. According to some political scientists, NP candidate Luis Alberto Lacalle has “zero chance” of winning the second round.
